Lesson 1 (from Prologue and Chapters 1-4)
Objective
Students will investigate Djavadi’s purpose in using an epigraph to begin the narrative of Disoriental and will make predictions about its possible connection to the thematic messages within the text.
Djavadi uses a song lyric from a PJ Harvey song called “A Place Called Home” as the epigraph for Disoriental. Within the two lines provided, the song’s speaker is wondering anxiously whether “One day there’ll be a place for us/A place called home“ (7). By unpacking the themes, tones, and moods contained within the choice of epigraph, students will see how conducting such a study can illuminate the text's meaning, even if they have only just begun to read the work in question.
