Chapters 1-3

Seemingly unconnected events occur in the first three chapters. The objective of this lesson is to analyze the major events that take place in Chapters 1 - 3 and look for any possible connections.

Lesson

1. Class Discussion: What happens in Chapter 1? Is it clear to the reader what exactly is happening or where these events take place? Where is the darkening plain? What is the tower? In this desolate place, what signs of intelligent life are present? The author ends Chapter 1 with what words? Do these words provide a hint regarding the era in which Chapter 1 takes place? What happens in Chapter 2? What connections or similarities, if any, do you find between the events and descriptions of Chapters 1 and 2?

2. Written Assignment: Summarize Chapter 3, explaining who Susan Way is, what she's waiting for, why she's cross, and who Michael might be.
