Lesson 1 (from Part I (pages 1 - 43))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to examine how Gay uses flashbacks in the story "I Will Follow You" to set the pace of the plot in a way that heightens the suspense of the narrator's backstory. The reader knows that something terrible has happened to the narrator, Savvie, and her sister Carolina, and the full scale and brutality of their abduction as young girls is revealed in flashback sections that Gay intersperses with present-day events.
