• Andy Dufresne arrives at Shawshank Prison.

• Andy has been convicted of murdering his wife and her lover; he is innocent.

• Andy asks a fellow inmate to get him a poster of Rita Hayworth and also a rock hammer.
• The Sisters take an interest in Andy.

• Andy offers financial advise to the prison wardens in exchange for protection from The Sisters.
• Andy works on digging a hole in his cell wall in order to escape from prison; he uses the rock hammer given to him by Red Smith and hides his progress behind the poster of Rita Hayworth that is also given to him by Red Smith.

• Andy takes over the prison library and works hard to improve it, including requesting funding money from the state.
