Objective
Objective: Over the next 30 days students will be reading Desert Queen: The Extraordinary Life of Gertrude Bell, Adventurer, Adviser to Kings, Ally of Lawrence of Arabia. This lesson serves to stimulate student interest in studying Janet Wallach's biography of Gertrude Bell.
1) Research: To promote interest and provide a foundation for the next thirty days, have class members research Janet Wallach, author of Desert Queen. Students are to examine what has brought her to compile an account of Gertrude Bell's life when there are perhaps ten others already available. They are also to examine synoptic overviews of Bell's life, her upbringing, her education, the period she lives in, where she travels, what adventures she pursues, and other aspects. They will also read a short synopsis of the book that the next thirty lessons will center on. Have some volunteers discuss their findings with the class.
