· Following a dedication and an epigraph, the novel begins with Chapter 1 and the eponymous narrating protagonist reporting his birth, remarking that “the worst of the job was up to me, my mother being let’s just say out of it” (1).
· The circumstances of the protagonist’s birth are detailed, and presumed predictions about the life that would follow that birth, based on its circumstances, are presented.
· The next section opines on other omens emerging from the circumstance of the protagonist’s birth.
