Lesson 1 (from Volume 1, Chapter 1-5)

Objective

Volume 1, Chapters 1-5: De Tocqueville focuses on the differences between an aristocracy and a democracy. This lesson will focus on what types of government are "available" to choose from and explores the differences between them.

Lesson

1. As each person enters the class, give them a seat based on when they enter class. The people who enter class first get to sit in chairs; those who enter last can stand. You can include a variation with people sitting on the floor, on counters, or who have to stand on one leg. Then have a class brainstorming session for the definition of an aristocracy. After the class brainstorms, ask them how they felt to be assigned a seating position based on when they entered the room. Have them do a quick small group activity that relates this to how position in society is based on birth and bloodlines...
