Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-5)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to contemplate the motivation for writing a book and to consider the author's connection to the material and qualifications for writing a Young Adult novel. Students will discover the formal definition of Young Adult literature and discuss the author's qualifications and/or motivations for writing in this genre.

Class Discussion: Have any of you ever thought about writing a book or story? Why did you want to do that? Do you have to know about a topic to write about it? Why or why not? Who is the author of Define "Normal?" What does the book jacket tell you about the author?
