Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

On more than one occasion Simon Rule is critical toward Kate. Why? Do you think Simon has a legitimate reason to reprimand Kate? Do you think Kate is out of line with her requests and actions? Do you think the tension between the two is purely work related or do you think that their custody battle over Peter interferes with the work? If their personal lives interfere, how might the issue(s) be resolved? How does the tension affect others in the office?

Essay Topic 2

Backstories are important as they fill in the gaps of characters' lives that may not have been addressed elsewhere. This is seen clearly in the backstories of Helder, Lee, and the Rules, Kate and Simon, both as a couple and as individuals. Explain how Woods uses the technique. When is the appropriate time for a backstory? Does the backstory always resolve unanswered questions? Where might Woods use it in reference to other characters or situations? Give at least three examples and explain in detail.

Essay Topic 3

There is a great deal of political intrigue and international criminal activity involved in the book. This is a common theme for Stuart Woods in the Will Lee/Kate Rule series. Write about Woods' work. What other books involve Will Lee and Kate Rule and/or similar themes to the ones presented in "Deep Lie?" Why do you think Woods is so fascinated with terrorists and international intrigue? What is Woods' background? How many books has Woods written? Have you ever read any of Woods' other books? What are other main characters used by Woods? How do they compare to Lee/Rule?
