Lesson 1 (from Preface to Introduction - Chapter 1 (Parts I-III): "The Language of African Literature" )
Objective
This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book Decolonizing the Mind by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o. Students will research the author, read the Preface, “A Statement,” and the Introduction, and analyze the thesis that the author establishes for the work. The author establishes in the opening of Decolonizing the Mind his departure from writing in English in favor of writing in his native Gĩkũyũ. He asserts that this choice comes as a reaction to the “cultural bomb” (3) that has been implemented on the people of Africa by the forces of imperialism and colonization.
