Chapter One, Spirit of the Stairway
• Hettie is met by three girls who bring her a white dove which she pays them for and uses to see her future.
• The girls get mad and want more money. Hettie breaks Joy's leg by snapping a twig. She is looking for someone and says she does not want to miss her.
• Sexton is 16, and is writing a suicide note on his computer. He is not upset, but he is not happy either, and is tired of his empty life.
• Sexton goes to the dump when his mom sends him out so she can do some cleaning. He trips at the dump and gets stuck under a fridge.
• Didi helps him out and takes him to her apartment to fix his jeans. She is full of joy and life. He learns that her family died a month ago in an accident...
