Death Be Not Proud is a memoir by American author and journalist John Gunther which tells the story of Johnny Gunther, the author's teenage son who died on June 30, 1947. Gunther wrote Johnny's story to help others learn more about the devastating effects of a brain tumor. The book takes its name from Holy Sonnet X by John Donne. In this lesson, students are introduced to the book and will research, analyze and discuss the life and works of John Gunther.

1) Teacher Lecture: Introduce the students to the book and author. Death Be Not Proud by John Gunther was published in 1949. The nonfiction work relates the illness and death of the author's son, Johnny Gunther, who died in 1947 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage following treatment for a brain tumor.
