Objective
The objective of this lesson is to help students understand the poet, Ilya Kaminsky.
This award-winning poet is Russian-born but now an American citizen, His poetry is infused with characteristics of both Russian and American poetry styles.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Have the students answer the following questions: What is known about Ilya Kaminsky, the poet? How might this influence his poetry? How might this information about the poet prepare the reader for his poetry?
Small Group Activity: Split the students up into small groups and have them answer the following questions: How do critics describe Kaminsky's work? What does this praise for Kaminsky's poetry have in common? What can the reader expect from Kaminsky's poetry, based on the information given by the critics?
Individual Activity: Have the students reflect on their own upbringing and how that might affect the subject-matter, themes, and style of poetry they...
