Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1 – Chapter 4)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the exposition of the novel. Students will identify and analyze elements from the beginning of the novel in order to identify the main characters, the setting, and any potential conflicts and themes the story might contain.
The beginning of the novel introduces the reader to Sportcoat, his deceased wife Hettie, his best friend Hot Sausage, and the setting of the Cause. The reader is introduced to themes involving community, addiction, and crime. Finally, readers are introduced to potential conflicts, such as Sportcoat’s conflicts with Hettie and Deems.

Class Discussion: Make some predictions about what will happen as the novel progresses. What potential conflicts do you see emerging as the novel progresses? What does Sportcoat desire, and what obstacles stand in his way? How is Sportcoat in conflict with himself? How is Sportcoat in conflict...
