Objective

"David Copperfield" was published in 1849 in twenty installments. The novel was also republished several times during Dickens' lifetime. This lesson will focus on the reception of the novel and its place in history.

Lesson

1. Individual Presentations: Have students research the reception of the novel and its place in history. Have them take notes and prepare for a short presentation. Have each student present their findings about the reception of the novel and its place in history to the class in fewer than five minutes. Keep notes on the chalkboard.

2. Class Discussion: What findings are the same? Which are different? Why is the novel received in this way? How do other authors view this novel? What does Dickens think of this novel? What do the different editions of "David Copperfield" indicate? Why is it significant that the novel was published in installments?
