Dexter's foster father, a police officer named Harry Morgan, taught Dexter how to kill in a way that will keep him from getting caught. Harry also taught Dexter to only kill people who deserve to die. As a result, Dexter only targets serial killers and child molesters.

Darkly Dreaming Dexter is told from first-person point of view. The first-person point of view is useful in understanding the overall meaning of the novel in that we learn why the narrator, Dexter, acts in a certain manner. It also justifies to the reader why Dexter kills.
