• The first chapter, “The Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities,” opens with Darius struggling to operate the water boiler—which he nicknames Smaug—at his workplace, Tea Haven; his manager, Charles Apatan, looks on as Darius works against the machine and muses on its, his own, and his manager’s inadequacies.
• Darius muses on the interactions among tea, his family, and his Persian background, rehearsing an old joke with his mother as he does so; Charles’s literal-mindedness is contrasted with the joke.
• Darius continues to mentally disparage his present workplace, turning to muse upon his desired workplace, Rose City Teas; he is interrupted by the arrival of Trent and Chip; the former addresses him by an insulting nickname, which prompts rumination by...
