Before beginning to read a play, it is worthwhile to learn all you can about the context in which it is written. Today's objective is to analyze the blurbs on the book cover about the play, the author's biography, the publication date, and the dedication.

Lesson

1. Individual reading and writing: Study the cover and front matter of the play to answer the following questions. Record the answers in your reading log. What can you tell about the play from the title and cover art? When was the play published? When and where was the play first performed? What comments have been publicized about the play? What is the setting for the play? To whom did the playwright dedicate the play, and what information does this provide for you?

2. Partner discussion: Do you think this play will be interesting to read? Why, or why not?
