Objective
Genre is a type of literary work. The cover and back copy of Dance Hall of the Dead establish it as in the mystery genre. Events, setting, and characters are part of creating a mystery. The objective of this lesson is to learn about the genre of mystery.
Lesson
1) Class Discussion: What is genre? What is the genre of Dance Hall of the Dead. How do you know based on reading the first chapter? Be specific. Are there types or subgenres in this particular genre? Could this book be another genre? Why or why not?
2) Small Groups: Divide the students into groups of three or four. Have the students discuss what stories classified as mystery have in common. How do mysteries differ from literary or fantasy fiction? Discuss similar genres such as crime fiction, suspense, and thrillers. Are there differences between these genres and mysteries?
