Lesson 1 (from Pages 1-58)
Objective
Students will investigate the events and context of the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles prominently featured in the narrative and will use their findings to inform their understanding of the narrative as a whole.
While Taylor Jenkins Reid does an excellent job of presenting Daisy’s experiences sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, a true understanding of the work's themes and messages requires a working knowledge of the people, culture, and dangers associated with the Sunset Strip in the late 1960s and early 1970s when Daisy was a regular presence on the Strip starting at the tender age of 14. By investigating a number of historical and societal elements centered on the Sunset Strip in the late 1960s and early 1970s, students will gain an overarching view of the writer's intentions.
