Objective
Crumbs from the Table of Joy is a play about race. Race issues are brought to the forefront when the father of a Black family marries a white woman. The objective of this lesson is to discuss the role race plays in the play.
Lesson
Group Discussion: In what time is the play set? What do you know about race relations in America at that time? What do the characters of Godfrey, Lily, Ernestine, and Ermina say that indicate how they feel about race? How is Gerte, as a white woman, treated by the members of the Crump family?
Small Group Activity: Diagram the things the members of the Crump family say about race. Share your findings with the class.
Individual Activity: Write a paragraph about how the characters’ attitudes about race in Crumbs From the Table of Joy might or might not be different if...
