The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and upbringing. The author Jonathan Franzen grew up in Western Springs, Illinois. He may have grown up in a town much like the one he depicts in the novel Crossroads.

Class Discussion: What might it be like growing up in the 1960s in a town like Western Springs, Illinois for the author? Did the town have Midwestern values? As a class, assign a few students to look up what the values and issues were in the 1960s and 1970s in small Midwestern towns during that timeframe, and discuss your findings.
