Larry is depicted as being very closely tied to his parents in many ways. He lives in their former home, but also takes care of his mother's chickens now that she is in a nursing home due to advanced Alzheimer's disease. In addition, Larry cares deeply about his mother, as shown when the narrator comments on the nursing home in which Larry's mother lives, stating, "He'd have preferred somewhere better, but it was all he could afford" (3).

2. What is the symbolism of the zombie mask in Chapter 1?

At several key points in the narrative, there are references to a horrific yet realistic full-head mask of a zombie. In Chapter 1, when Larry is attacked by someone wearing the mask, the mask symbolizes the danger of the unknown. Only much later, when the identity of the person who wore it during the attack on Larry in Chapter 1 is revealed, the mask becomes a catalyst for the revelation of truth. In Chapter 1, it is purely a symbol of mystery and enigma.
