Objective

Objective: Introduction Damon Knight is an experienced professor who has written novels and short stories. He has been teaching writing workshops and focuses on the short story. This lesson will focus on the experiences of the author and why it is significant that this author's experience will provide insight for the reader.

1) Class Discussion: Why do you think a writing professor needs experience in writing? Does Damon Knight have this experience? How do you know? What kind of experience does a writer need? Why?

2) Journal Entry: After reading the introduction, can you conclude that Damon Knight has the necessary experience to write this book? Why or why not?

3) Writing Assignment: Knight focuses on fictional short stories. What does this mean? What skills must one have to write short stories as opposed to novels and other types of writing? Write at least one paragraph explaining your answer.
