Lesson 1 (from Prologue)
Objective
In this lesson, students will examine how setting contributes to plot, mood, and tone in Crazy Rich Asians. There are several settings in this novel, but the first that is presented, in 1986, establishes several of the main characters, their wealth, and their power. Set in London, the Prologue introduces eight-year-old Nicholas Young and his family as they arrive at Heathrow Airport and begin to check in at the elite Calthorpe Hotel. When the Young family is discriminated against by a racist manager, Harry Leong, husband to Felicity, buys the hotel outright.

Research/Independent Activity: Take time in class to conduct research on the events and international affairs in 1986 and the history of relations between Singapore and Great Britain. Examine the economy and international relations of the United Kingdom and Singapore in 1986.
