1. Name and discuss two themes that emerge within the epigraph of the memoir Crazy Brave.
Harjo includes an epigraph before the body of her memoir begins. The epigraph is written from the first person point of view and the speaker states, "I once traveled far above the earth" (8). The speaker goes on to describe the way in which distance provides perspective, which acts as one theme within the passage. Another theme that arises within the epigraph is related to the beauty that can be found within the human story, as symbolized by the elastic webs of light Harjo describes surrounding the earth and pulsing with the collective effort of all earth's inhabitants.
2. What role did Jazz music play in the development of Harjo's identity?
Early in the memoir, Harjo describes an early memory she has of riding in the backseat of her parents' car. As she listened to the Jazz music coming out of the car's speakers, she had some sort of new understanding of life that even now she has a hard time describing. Ultimately, Harjo describes the moment as "a rite of passage into the world of humanity," (10) pointing to the event as an important one in the story of her life.
