Objective
Students will investigate Harjo’s purpose in using an epigraph to begin the narrative of Crazy Brave and will make predictions about its possible connection to the thematic messages within the text.
The epigraph Joy Harjo includes prior to the opening of her memoir Crazy Brave has an inherently mysterious tone and the identity of its speaker is not entirely clear. The epigraph, therefore, sets the tone for many aspects of the subsequent memoir, such as its inclusion of poetry, stories mixing truth with fiction, and other such elements. The epigraph also creates a thematic foundation for the text, suggesting coming major themes of the memoir, such as harmony, dissonance, the power of intuition, and the elasticity of the space-time continuum.
