• An epigraph is included prior to the memoir’s opening in which the narrator begins by stating, “Once I traveled far above the earth” (8) and goes on to describe the experience.
• The part of the memoir entitled East begins on page 9, which acts as a title page with a description of the easterly direction as “the direction of beginnings” (9).
• Harjo was born in Oklahoma and her people are those of the Creek Nation.
• She recalls a distant memory of when she was riding in the backseat of her biological parents’ car, listening to jazz music.
• The jazz music opened something up inside her soul, though she did not yet have the words to express it.
