Lesson 1 (from The Gringo and the Mexicano)
Objective
The reader is introduced to Alonso but then Alonso is captured and doesn't reappear until the very end of the story. The objective of this lesson is to encourage students to make predictions about future events and outcomes.
Lesson
1. For class discussion: Have students predict what becomes of Alonso. Ask questions such as, "Would you be surprised to learn that he becomes a warehouse clerk?" and "Would you be surprised to learn that he becomes a police officer?" Discuss possibilities and why some are reasonable.
2. For a class project: Have students write an essay predicting Alonso's life after he is separated from Ted. Ask students what clues lead them to their conclusions.
3. For homework: Have students write a story in which they predict the details of the life of some character other than Alonso or Ted. Encourage that students research the issue of illegal immigration and...
