Trees

These objects symbolize a planned future that will never arrive. At the beginning of the play, in a flash-forward scene, Eddie talks about the loss of a woman who will later come to be recognized as Ani. He says that her death had occurred only a week before her birthday, a day when the couple had planned to be in Maine observing the glory of these objects as they changed colors.

Computer

This object represents optimism and forward motion. Eddie uses this object to seek out knowledge he lacks, such as when he searches for ways to help Ani improve her quality of life after her accident. Though Ani is sarcastic about Eddie’s enthusiasm regarding the usefulness of this object, the knowledge he gleans from it does indeed help to improve Ani’s quality of life.
