• The epigraph Majok includes prior to the play's opening comes from Andre Dubus’s story “Dancing After Hours.”
• The epigraph broadens the typical definition of service and connection, naming even the smallest acts of kindness, such as returning one's cart to the front of the store after unloading groceries, as acts of “joining the world” (vii).
• Majok includes a variety of materials before beginning the play, such as a section called "Folks" (5) that introduces the four characters in Cost of Living.
• John is in his mid-twenties, as is Jess, while Eddie is in his late forties.
• Ani's name is pronounced "Ah-nee" according to the stage directions and she is said to be in her early forties.
