The tone of a writing reveals the author's attitude toward the material he is writing. Today's objective is to analyze the tone Wilson takes toward experiences that seem to him to be "unexplainable."
Lesson
1. Individual reading/writing: In your reading log, record phrases in the first section, "Thinking About the Unthinkable," that establish the author's tone. Include such phrases as "absurdly ridiculous conspiracy theories," "like trying to find a cobra in a dark room before it finds you," and "rising organ music, please."
2. Partner discussion: With your partner, compare the phrases that you wrote and try to arrive at a one-word description you both agree on for the tone Wilson adopts in this section. Is it easy to agree or do you see several different possibilities? What type of reader do you think Wilson is aiming at by adopting this tone?
