About the Author

Have the students write a short biography on Gayle Jones. Have them read a biography and as a class, discuss what events in her life may have influenced the novel.

Party

Throw a small party for the class after the novel and test are finished. Have students bring food that was prepared in the book and have them relate the food to the corresponding event from the book.

Dress Up

Have the students come to class dressed up as a character in the book. For extra fun, have them try to act as that character during the class period. Have fun interacting with all the characters of the novel!
