Lesson 1 (from Author's Note - Chapter 5)

Objective

The objective of this lesson is to examine Blakinger's struggle with eating disorders, and why she struggled with eating disorders. Blakinger first vomited when she was 12. In ninth grade, she "began starving [herself] in earnest" (28).

Class Discussion: How old was Blakinger when she first learned that you could "take a spoon" and "stick it down your throat" (16)? When and how did she feel her life was out of control? In sixth or seventh grade, how did Blakinger start vomiting, weighing herself, and obsessing with calorie counts? How was Blakinger unhappy at school? How did Blakinger feel about her weight and appearance compared to other girls who were figure skaters? In Chapter 5, where and how did Blakinger start vomiting in 2000?
