· In the Author’s Note, Blakinger writes that the book is a memoir.
· It is drawn from her experiences and what she remembers as well as from letters and journal entries.
· Some names and identifying details of people she met behind bars—staff and most prisoners—have been changed.
· She used the real names of people who are dead and the real names of prisoners she met when she worked as a reporter after her release.
· As requested, she has used the real names of Stacy Burnett and her pet chicken.
