Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 6))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the role that performing with Bobbi plays in Frances's life. Frances is far less outgoing than Bobbi and she sees Bobbi as the more charismatic one of the two of them; the far better performer. But Frances's performing with Bobbi seems to give her a sense of confidence in her own right, and Frances is the sole writer of the material.
Lesson
Class Discussion: What kind of performing do Frances and Bobbi do? What role do each of the young women play in their writing and performing? What kinds of opportunities does their performing afford each of them? Why do you think Rooney chooses not to let the reader in on any of the actual material Frances writes and that she and Bobbi perform? How does Frances seem to feel after performing with Bobbi?
