• His typewriter has a triplicate form loaded and ready to go.
• It is titled “Interoffice Memo” (1) and includes the current date below its title, with nothing yet written below.
• He remarks to himself aloud, “Hot in here” before looking at a yellow paper on his desk.
• Tom hears his wife searching through her closet and thinks to himself that rather than the heat affecting him, it is likely a “guilty conscience” (1).
• Nevertheless, Tom then goes to his living room window and tries to open it.
• The narrator describes how heavy the window is and how difficult it is to open.
• Tom eventually manages to open the window a couple of inches...
