Personal change. The Confessions of St. Augustine is the story of Augustine's transformation from a young man driven by ambition and lust to the famous Christian monk, leader, and philosopher.
The objective of this lesson is to look at personal change.
Lesson
1. Class discussion. Is change possible? How difficult is it to change an ingrained habit? How does one go about changing? Is it easier for the young to change than the old? How can one tell if someone has changed? What problems caused Augustine to change? Were the final changes in him good or bad? Would he have changed if he hadn't gone through all the circumstances in the book?
2. Group work. Students will make a list of changes that people try to make. These can include physical: exercising, weight loss, quitting cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, sugar, etc. or mental or spiritual. Groups should rate each...
