Cooking in Nat Turner's day
See if you can locate some recipes from the early to mid-1800s. Does it sound like something you'd like to eat? Ask your parents to help you make something that sounds interesting. Is this something a free white person would have cooked, or is it something a slave might have eaten? What are some of the different foods mentioned in the book? Were you able to find recipes for any of them?
Clothing
Draw pictures of how you think Nat would have looked as a slave. What were his clothes made of? Cotton? Wool? Linen? Silk? Can you find a little piece of these materials and feel the differences? Now draw pictures of Miss Margaret or Samuel Turner. What were their clothes made of? Whose clothing would have been more useful? More beautiful? Longer lasting?
