Essay Topic 1

Confidence is a feeling Rebecca struggles with on an everyday basis. She simply cannot keep up with those around her. Address Rebecca's struggle when it comes to confidence. Why is she often not confident in her abilities and knowledge? How does this change over the course of the story? When does she realize that she is, in fact, intelligent?

Essay Topic 2

Rebecca never shies away from a good glass of champagne. Yet, she is not an alcoholic. None of the characters in Confessions of a Shopaholic are alcoholics. Write an essay that deals with the subject of alcohol consumption. Why does Rebecca drink so much? Why does she expect champagne from every press conference she attends? In what way is alcohol an escape for her? Explain your rationale by providing examples from the book.

Essay Topic 3

Confessions of a Shopaholic is told from a first person perspective through its protagonist. Explain why this perspective is valuable to the tone of the story. Why would the author want to choose first person over third person? In what way is the story benefiting by being told through the eyes of Rebecca? Is the story more lighthearted or personal because of the way it is told? Reference the novel to support your argument.
