Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in Conditional Citizens. Students will discuss and research information such as where the author is from and her educational background. Students will consider how this information might impact their reading.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Who is the author of Conditional Citizens? Where is she from? What year was the book published? How was this work received by the public? What other works has the author written? How might the author’s background influence your reading of the book?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask them to compile a list of facts about the author, encouraging them to include information that impacts the stories, themes, and characters. Regroup and ask students to share their facts. Write a list on the board so...
