Objective

Objective: Section 1 This lesson will be an introduction to the book, with a focus on the author, genre, and themes that the students may encounter during their study. By taking the time to introduce the novel, the students will be better prepared to begin their study of the poet and his work. The objective of this lesson is an introduction to the book and author.

1) 1.) Class Discussion: Lead a discussion with the class on the following: What time period did the poet write in? What do we know about this time period? Where was the poet from? How could this affect his poetry?

2.) Group Activity: Have the students split into small groups and discuss the following: Who was Philip Larkin? What position did he hold in the university? What position did he turn down? How is this important?
