Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 66))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Maddie's path to becoming a pilot. When Maddie was still only a teenager, she loved to tinker with engines and machines, and she helped out in her grandfather's bicycle shop. Maddie was always mechanically inclined. When a plane crash-landed in a field near her house and Maddie saw that it was piloted by a woman, she was amazed. She began to hang around airfields and learn how to take apart engines and other parts of the planes, and how to fix them. Maddie also benefited from the opening of the Oakway Aerodrome, a new flight center near her house, right before the war began. After Maddie earned her basic pilot's qualifications, she had opportunities to fly because of the war effort that she would not have otherwise had.
