Lesson 1 (from "Cloud, Castle, Lake")
Objective
Students will explore background information on Vladimir Nabokov.
Few students are likely to have read Nabokov, and many will not even recognize his name. This lesson is intended to give biographical information on Nabokov that is important to understanding "Cloud, Castle, Lake." It also introduces students to Nabokov's love of Tiutchev's poetry and acquaints them with the relationship between several of Tiutchev's poems and the Nabokov story.
Lesson
Reading Activity: Distribute copies of the Poetry Foundation's biographical article "Vladimir Nabokov" (available online). Ask students to read and take notes on the details of Nabokov's biography and characteristics of his writing.
