Objective
Chapter one, "The Pacific Journal of Adam Ewing": This section of the book is written as a travel journal. This type of writing has a different flow and character from what students are used to reading in a novel. This lesson focuses on the type of writing that occurs, a travel journal, in this section of the book.
Lesson
1. Journal Assignment: When the students come into class ask each student to write a journal entry that answers the following question: I like/do not like reading a journal-style of writing because...? Select some students to share their answers with the class.
2. Group Discussion: Divide the class into small groups. Have each small group come up with a list of differences between normal narrative style and the writing in this chapter. Share the lists with the class.
