Objective
Citizen: An American Lyric is a multi-genre book by American poet, essayist, and playwright Claudia Rankine. Through essay, criticism, imagery, and poetry, the author explores the full scope and ramifications of racism that continues to plague mankind on a global scale. In Chapter 1, Rankine explores microagressions experienced by the author and her friends. This lesson introduces the author, explores the genre of the work, and introduces students to poetic style and structure.

Research Activity: Conduct research on author Claudia Rankine. How many novels, essays, plays, and works of poetry has Rankine written? What awards has Citizen: An American Lyric and the author won? What are common themes in Rankine’s works?
