Chapters 1-6

• When Jeremy Ruebens and Karl Inger visit Anita Blake at her office at Animators, Inc., they ask for the location of the Master of the City's daytime resting place which Anita refuses to disclose. She then threatens them and forces them to leave.

• After being paged by Dolph of the Regional Preternatural Investigation Team, Anita goes to the crime scene to examine the victim, and she determines that five vampires were responsible for the man's death which is odd since vampires usually hunt alone.
• After sleeping, Anita calls out of work and arranges a meeting with Jean-Claude, the Master of the City, for 8 p.m. at the Circus of the Damned. Although she is not looking forward to seeing Jean-Claude again, Anita convinces herself that she has no other choice.

• At the Circus of the Damned, which is owned by Jean-Claude, a shapeshifter named Stephen meets...
