The student will take notes and be able to relate the background and setting of the novel.

Classroom activity:
1. Teacher lecture deals with (1) the author as a best selling writer in Ireland; (2) the date of the beginning of the novel in the 1950s including social mores
of the times; (3) the main characters introduced in the first chapter; (4) the small town setting of the novel.
2. From the title, the main theme of the book is friendship. Other themes from the first chapter include: (1) weight problems for a girl; (2) poverty and
desertion; (3) dealing with adversity (in the character of Eve); (4) the Protestant/Catholic problem in Ireland.
3. After presenting these important background bits of information, the class will discuss the value of a novel on friendship. What are its social implications for the reader? How class differences make for difficult relationships even today.
