• The book is narrated in the third-person, past tense by the title character Circe, who is a Greek nymph, the daughter of the son-god Helios and another divinity named Perse.
• In Chapter 1, Circe said there was no word to describe what she was when she was born. Nymph means bride in her language.
• Circe's mother Perse was a nymph who was a daughter of the water god Oceanus, a titan.
• Helios was also a titan and a regular in Oceanus's halls. Perse caught Helios's eye and when he asked to couple with her she said he must marry her, and he could have affairs with others but never bring them home.
• Perse was unhappy with Circe from the beginning because she was not...
