Chuck Palahniuk is known as a satire writer. Satire is a literary composition in which human follies are held up to scorn and ridicule. Classic writers of satire include Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., Jonathan Swift, George Orwell, and Sinclair Lewis to name a few. This lesson will discuss satire as a literary device.

Lesson

1. Class discussion--What is satire? What is the purpose of satire. Why is Choke considered satire? Give at least one example of satire from each of the first five chapters. What is the exaggeration in these examples.

2. Writing assignment--Have the class pick one current or historical event and write a 1-2 page analysis of how the satire in the beginning of choke relates to it. Take volunteers to read their answers aloud.
